Books On Buses Project
CBE Transportation has worked with The Little Red Reading House Book Bank (part of the University of Calgary’s Owerko Centre) to establish the Books On Buses Project. CBE Transportation has selected schools to participate in the project.
While our school was not selected, some of our buses are shared with a school that is participating in the project.
In the coming weeks, The Little Red Reading House Book Bank will provide crates filled with new and gently used books for students to read while they are on the bus. There will be a mix of age-appropriate picture, chapter and non-fiction books. The crates will be safely secured by the service provider to ensure there are no safety concerns.
Your students riding on buses shared by these partner schools will have access to books. Please note, not all buses at your school will have a crate available.
Students are asked to return the books at the end of each trip to share with other students. We will monitor how many books are being used and how often they need to be replenished in the new year.
Mayland Heights Choir Performance
On Monday, Dec 18th our Mayland Heights Student Choir will be performing at the CareWest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre. The centre has been offering the community of Calgary programs and services for 289 long-term care residents and rehabilitation clients since 1978. Our students are excited to be bringing their songs and beautiful voices to brighten the residents day. Thank you to the parent volunteers who are making this experience possible for our students.
Looking for French Immersion Alumni
French Immersion is celebrating 50 years in the Calgary Board of Education (CBE). If you have been a student in a CBE French Immersion Program we would like to hear from you. Please contact Mrs. Korpela at ickorpela@cbe.ab.ca to share your experience.
Dressing for the Weather in December
December snowfall has finally arrived. We remind parents to ensure their children are dressed for the weather now that the temperatures are colder. All students are expected to go outside for recess and lunch. We recognize the value of outdoor breaks such as recess and lunch during the school day, however, when the temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including the wind-chill factor, students will be kept inside for recess or lunch breaks.
Digital Well-Being and Your Child (Article)
As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in helping your child develop a healthy relationship with the virtual world. This is known as supporting their digital well-being. It means helping them enjoy the benefits of technology, while lowering the risks of harm.
Supporting digital well-being isn’t about enforcing strict limits on technology use. Instead, it’s about building kids’ skills to use technology responsibly and safely, and in ways that promote their overall well-being. We have shared a link here for Alberta Health Services where you can access resources to learn about things you can do at home.
Parent Pick Up and Drop Off
An important reminder for parents:
- pull over and park to drop off their children.
- always use the door on the side of the sidewalk.
- do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off.
We have seen too many near misses lately and we are concerned. Thank you for your cooperation.
