Think Fast Comedy Workshops for students
Next week, we are pleased to welcome Mat Mailandt, founder of ThinkFast Comedy. All students from Grade 1 to 6 in French and English will have an opportunity to work on their communication skills, teamwork and problem solving techniques in a fun and safe environment. Think Fast Comedy uses comedy and youth as the perfect combination to learn valuable life skills through the tenants of improv, sketch and stand-up comedy. Be sure to speak with your child about the workshops they will be participating in all week long.
School Assembly- Friday, October 13th at 11:15am
We will be having our school wide assembly for this month on Friday, Oct 13th. Each month, we have a group of classes that will be leading the assembly and this month Ms. Brandy (grade ¾) and Mme Ashleigh (Gr 2 French) will be leading our school assembly. Parents of these two classes are invited to join us if they wish.
OurSCHOOL Student Survey Administration
Mayland Heights School will be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. This anonymous survey is completely voluntary for all CBE students. Please find the details of the survey implementation below.
CBE’s Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes. Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.
Grades 4-6 students provide feedback on:
- sense of belonging
- positive relationships
- anxiety
- feeling safe at school
- life satisfaction
- general health
- orientation to well-being
- goal-oriented
- self-regulation
- cultural awareness of others
Additionally, Grades 6 students provide feedback on:
- depression
- self-esteem
- cultural awareness of self
Demographic questions are also asked on this survey for norming purposes. These are:
Grades 4-6 general
- age, gender, Indigenous status, immigrant status, home language.
Grades 6-12 specific
- grade repeater, reasons for changing schools, disability or medical conditions that limits participation in school activities or learning.
If you have questions or would like to request more information about Mayland Heights School’s upcoming implementation of the OurSCHOOL Student Survey, please contact the Principal, Mrs. Korpela at ickorpela@cbe.ab.ca
School Council and Parent Society -Update
Please take a moment to look at the School Council and Parent Society draft minutes from the September meeting. All parents are welcome to attend these meetings to learn about events happening in the school and also help the executive group organize events for our students at Mayland Heights.
The October meeting will be extremely important as this will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and all positions will be open for election. (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Members at large)
We hope to see you there on Wednesday, October 25th, the meeting starts at 6:30pm in the library.
Visitors in our School
At Mayland Heights School, we strive to provide a safe and caring learning environment for all our staff and students. To maintain this level of safety, we are asking all parents to check in to the office if they arrive at the school to pick up their child. We cannot have adults in the hallways during the school day without proper identification. Thank you for your understanding.
Reporting Absences and Student Illness
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-6290 ext. 1.
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well enough to participate in all school activities. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible.
