Changes to Classrooms
Our school has seen a significant decline in enrollment across multiple grades and programs this fall. As part of our ongoing commitment to support student success and ensure quality teaching and learning we have reconfigured some of our classes. Our school needed to surplus (remove) 1 full time teacher. Mme Ashleigh Natividad has chosen to volunteer herself to surplus. She will be transferring to a different CBE school by the end of the month. We wish Mme Ashleigh the very best in her next position and thank her for her wonderful years of commitment to the Mayland Heights community.
We have collapsed the grade 4/5 split class and now have a single grade 4 (Mme Jade Anderson) and a single grade 5 class (Mme Sonia Daigle-Patenaude) in French Immersion. We also had to modify teacher assignments in order to meet the needs of the French Immersion program. As such, Mme Katrina Hegmann is moving to our grade 2 French Immersion class in Room 212. Morning classes will now be taught by Mme Brigite Fournier (AM). Afternoon classes will be taught by Sara Reinikka-Scott (PM). Students will stay in the same classroom. Teachers are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all students and minimize impact on learning.
Parents and Visitors in the School
All parents and visitors are required to report to the office. Parents are not permitted to travel in the school hallways without being accompanied by a staff member. We ask all parents to say their goodbyes at the front door in the morning and allow their children to build independence by entering the building on their own and carrying their personal items themselves (backpacks, lunch box and shoes). This is to ensure safety for all students and staff at Mayland Heights. We thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding.
Student Personal Mobile Devices in School
Cell phones and other devices will be restricted in all schools in Alberta again this year. Personal mobile devices include any device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet, such as a cell phone, tablet, gaming device, laptop or smartwatch. This also includes devices capable of communicating with a mobile device such as headphones and Bluetooth devices (e.g. earbuds and speakers.)
These new rules will apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.
- -CBE will block student access to known social media platforms on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
- -K-9 Students: will not be permitted to use personal mobile devices during the school day. Student devices brought to school must be out of sight and either powered off or set to silent. They should be left in backpacks, lockers or areas designated by teachers or better yet - simply left at home.
If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class without permission from the teacher, we will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected.
Positive results have already been seen within schools that have implemented similar measures in recent years. Our goal is to improve student achievement and well-being with a focused and supportive learning environment.
The Student Personal Mobile Devices Administrative Regulation will be in place for the first day of school. However, it is set to be reviewed in December, 2024. At that time, any feedback from schools will be considered before it is finalized as of Jan. 1, 2025. For more information, please visit our Digital Citizenship page.
Morning Drop Off - 9AM - 9:15AM
All students are asked to enter the school using the front entrance in the morning. Doors open at 9AM and until 9:15AM when all our school buses have arrived. Students arriving after 9:15AM will need to ring the front doorbell and report to the front office for a late slip. Arriving at school on time helps form healthy habits for students and allow them to start their day without the stress of feeling rushed or missing out on critical morning classroom routines.
Afternoon Pick Up is at 3:50PM-
No calls to classrooms will be made after 3:30PM for pick up. We ask parents to consider making plans ahead of time with their children for a meeting spot around the school to facilitate the busy doorways and help vehicle traffic. Families driving to pick up children are encouraged to park on side streets and allow our 4 large buses to park in front of the school and load our students. Parents should consider driving in the same direction as the buses.
- Do not make u-turns in the middle of the street.
- Parents are not permitted to park in the school parking lot. The parking lot is reserved for staff and daycare vans or special mobility vehicles. Children running across the parking lot or street is dangerous. Practice safe traffic habits with your children. We care about all our students and families and do not want anyone hurt.
TERRY FOX - 45th Anniversary
It’s the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. This year, our school is going all out to support cancer research! We’re proud to carry on Terry’s legacy by coming together as a school community to make a difference. Our run will take place on September 25th, 2025 at 3:00 pm on the school field.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY - Sept 26
For more than a century, thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools. This government policy had individual, family, and community intergenerational trauma impacts. Mayland Heights will be showing their support for Truth and ReconciliACTION by wearing an orange shirt on Friday, September 26th. To learn more about Orange Shirt Day please visit this link ORANGE SHIRT DAY.
